Ai Weiwei

Conceptual artist, Ai Weiwei, is known for engaging political and cultural criticism to investigate instances of government corruption and cover-ups, confronting China’s stance on democracy and human rights. In 1999 he participated in the 48th Venice Biennale and the documenta XII in 2007. In 2011 Time Magazine listed Ai as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world. Ai studied at the Parsons School of Design, New York.

Bicycle is a limited edition of 60 custom-made bikes—which the artist says symbolize the innate human desire for free will in expression and mobility—were first exhibited during the Brooklyn Museum’s 2014 retrospective Ai Weiwei: According to What?
